I made my first no-sew tutu for my baby girl Julianna before she was even born!

I’m not great with a sewing machine and I love the look of a DIY no-sew tutu, so when I found out how to make a tutu skirt without sewing, I made a few more. They’re great for special occasions, a Halloween costume, and special events like family photoshoots, like this one below.

If you want to recreate this trash-the-dress photo shoot with washable paint, this is how I did it.

You can also do this to make a tutu table skirt for events like bridal showers, to put on a dessert table at little princess-themed birthday parties, around a cake table, or even to create fairy wings or a rainbow veil headband.

The great ideas are endless… and this DIY tutu isn’t just for little girls. You can make them for girls of all ages and even create an adult tutu with an elastic waistband the same way.

I tried this before with strips of fabric for a pirate Halloween look and it got very heavy, so stick with different colors of tulle or black tulle – whatever look you’re going for with your tulle strips.

One last note before we start – do not put this simple skirt in the washing machine!

Julianna had a pink and yellow one for her first birthday, a scarlet and gray one to cheer on the Ohio State Buckeyes, and now, she has a rainbow tutu.

This one was for a fun family shoot!

All of the other tutus I made were with ribbon. I would tie the tutu skirt on and untie it to take it off.

Because Julianna is older now, she’s able to dress herself, so I made this no-sew tutu with layers of tulle and elastic she can easily pull on and off. Both are great because both grow with your little girl, so the tutu skirts can be worn for a while.

How to Make a No-Sew Rainbow Tulle Tutu Skirt

Learning how to make a no-sew tutu is easier to watch than reading, so I’ve included this video tutorial in addition to some written instructions. It’s a super easy tutorial.

1. First, you shouldn’t need more than two yards of tulle to complete a tutu skirt for a little girl’s waist size.

2. Whether you’re using a ribbon or elastic, the waist measurement process is the same. The easiest way is to just wrap it around your little girl’s waist and mark where you should start and finish.

3. Once you have the tulle, lay it out long way on a flat surface. I fold it up, keeping it long ways, to make it easier to cut strips of tulle.

4. Cut at least 4-inch pieces of tulle. The smaller the tulle piece, the shorter the tutu.

5. Cutting Tip: Fold the tulle in half and cut. Repeat until you have your desired length of tulle for the tutu skirt.

6. When all of your pieces are cut, tie them around the elastic or ribbon. If you’re using an elastic, you can pull the tulle through the holes. The more holes you fill, the fuller the tutu will be.

7. Be sure to stop and make sure you’re not tying too much tulle to the ribbon or elastic by trying it on your little girl as you go.

8. You can either tie the ribbon or elastic in a bow when putting it on your little girl, or you could sew the elastic together when you finish.

Good luck making your rainbow tutu skirt… or whatever tulle you decide to buy for your no-sew tutu!

Have Rainbow Tulle Left Over From Your Tutu Skirt?

When it comes to crafting and DIY projects, few materials are as versatile and enchanting as tulle.

From elegant wedding gowns to whimsical tutus, tulle has a myriad of applications that extend far beyond fashion. Here are numerous things you can create with this fabulous fabric you may have left.

Delicate Veils and Headpieces

For brides-to-be and fashion-forward individuals, tulle offers endless possibilities for creating stunning veils and headpieces. Whether you prefer a classic veil cascading down your back or a whimsical birdcage veil, tulle can be manipulated to achieve the desired effect. Furthermore, it’s ideal for crafting intricate hair accessories such as fascinators, flower crowns, and delicate headbands.

Mesmerizing Decorations

Create an enchanting ambiance by draping tulle from the ceiling or wrapping it around banisters and chair backs. Its sheer and lightweight nature allows it to create a soft, romantic atmosphere. Tulle can also be used to make beautiful table runners, chair covers, and bows for a touch of elegance.

Captivating Gift Wrapping

Take your gift-giving to the next level by incorporating tulle into your wrapping technique. Wrap gifts in layers of tulle, securing them with a beautiful ribbon, to add an element of surprise and delight. Tulle can also be fashioned into charming gift bags or used to create delicate fabric flowers to adorn presents. Your thoughtful packaging will undoubtedly make a lasting impression.

Fairy Wings and Costumes

With its lightweight and semi-translucent nature, tulle is perfect for bringing fairy tale characters to life. Whether you’re designing wings for a child’s costume or crafting an elaborate outfit for a themed party, tulle will add an ethereal touch and create an enchanting visual effect.

Delightful Party Decorations

Use tulle to create eye-catching backdrops for photo booths, elegant chair covers, or delicate garlands to hang from the ceiling. By combining different colors and textures of tulle, you can tailor the decorations to match any theme or color scheme.

The creative possibilities offered by tulle are truly endless. So, gather your tulle, unleash your creativity, and let the magic unfold!

Using Tulle in Your Family Photoshoot

Incorporating tulle can elevate the aesthetic and create a dreamy atmosphere in your family photo shoots. Here are some other ideas.

Choose the Perfect Color Palette

Before diving into the tulle-filled world of family photo shoots, consider selecting a color palette that complements your family’s style and personality. Soft pastel shades like blush pink, baby blue, and mint green can create a dreamy and ethereal atmosphere, while bolder colors can add vibrancy and personality to the shoot.

Coordinate the tulle colors with your family’s outfits to create a cohesive and visually pleasing aesthetic.

Create a Tulle Backdrop

One of the easiest ways to incorporate tulle into your family photo shoot is by creating a beautiful backdrop. Hang a curtain of tulle behind your family or drape it from a tree branch in an outdoor setting.

Choose a color that contrasts or complements your family’s outfits. The soft, flowing nature of tulle will add depth and texture to the background, creating a visually captivating scene.

Add Tulle Accents

In addition to the backdrop, consider using tulle accents to enhance the overall look of your family portraits. Attach tulle to chairs or benches, creating a flowing and elegant effect.

You can also fashion tulle into bows, ribbons, or sashes to add a touch of whimsy and femininity to the shoot. These subtle tulle accents will add charm and cohesiveness to the composition.

Incorporate Tulle Props

To infuse a playful and magical element into your family photo shoot, consider using tulle props. Create tulle-wrapped balloons, fabric flowers, or even a tulle tent or fort for children to play in.

These props will not only add visual interest but also create a sense of fun and adventure, capturing the genuine smiles and laughter of your loved ones.

Dressing in Tulle

We covered this one already! Have your little ones wear tulle skirts or dresses, while adults can accessorize with tulle scarves, shawls, or even tulle wraps.

Outdoor Tulle Adventure

Take your family photo shoot to the great outdoors and make use of the natural elements. Find a picturesque location, such as a blooming field or a forest grove, and let tulle interact with the surroundings.

Capture the delicate interplay of light and tulle as it dances in the wind, creating ethereal and enchanting visuals. The outdoor setting will provide a backdrop of natural beauty, enhancing the overall charm of the photos.
