ESPN Reporter Britt McHenry thinks she is better than us. She is in a bit of hot water for some things she said to a woman she was paying to get her car back… after it was towed. In case you haven’t seen the viral video yet, some things said include:

“I’m in the news sweetheart, I will f*cking sue this place.” (You don’t have to be on TV to sue a place. Sweetheart.)

“So I could be a college dropout and do the same thing?” (Ask Mark Zuckerberg. He dropped out of college.)

“I’m on television and you’re in a f*cking trailer, honey.” (How do you know where she lives?)

“Lose some weight, baby girl.” (Oh, here we go with the weight thing again.)

And there was a lot more. It wasn’t pretty. The next day, I saw an article written in the Washington Post by a man who I thought somewhat defended her behavior because of who she is and what she does. (Note, the writer is a Georgetown graduate… so, he may think he is better than me since I’m a non-Ivy leaguer.) And this brings me to my point of this blog…

At this moment, this ESPN reporter thought she better than the woman who worked at the towing company because of her education level, her looks, her job, etc. I don’t like a lot of things, and this is one of them. It doesn’t matter what you do, where you went to school or how much money you make. None of that makes you better than anyone. The only thing, in my opinion, that make you “better” than someone is your character… and the biggest part of your character is how you treat people – no matter what they do, where they went to school, or how much money they make.

Now, in her defense I will say: Sometimes we all say things we don’t mean when we are heated. If you’ve ever been towed before, you know nothing gets you more heated than that. I’m going to stereotype and generalize for a minute here – something I hate, but it’s my blog, so I’m going to do it. Those towing companies and employees aren’t the most upstanding. Example – in this case, the “parking lot attendant” was actually an employee at a towing company. Yes, that’s how many of of them operate.

So, I’m going to leave with something my mom told me once, “You catch more bees with honey than you do with vinegar.”

  1. Kristen says:

Her behavior was atrocious. The hate she’s receiving is ridiculous though…yes what she said was entitled and ugly, but so is the criticism of her. I did a web interview about this today…

  2. I really really reaaaally don’t like when people think that because they have a degree or a high – paying job that they can look down their noses at others. People who treat those who they see as less fortunate then themselves usually have the worst character. It’s one thing to be upset at a messed up situation and quite another to attack others because you are upset. I think that she really needs a lesson in humility.

  3. It was bad and yes, I have been in situations like that that suck..but she got really personal. Regardless of if she was provoked or what not…it was just so downright mean!!!!
