The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett got a lot of attention when it was released, so I was excited to read it. When I started, I couldn’t wait to finish it – not because it was good, but because I was looking forward to more action, something happening… it never really did for me.

The Vanishing Half Book Summary

The Vignes twin sisters will always be identical. But after growing up together in a small, southern black community and running away at age sixteen, it’s not just the shape of their daily lives that is different as adults, it’s everything: their families, their communities, their racial identities.

Many years later, one sister lives with her black daughter in the same southern town she once tried to escape.

The other secretly passes for white, and her white husband knows nothing of her past.

Still, even separated by so many miles and just as many lies, the fates of the twins remain intertwined. What will happen to the next generation, when their own daughters’ storylines intersect?

My Book Review for The Vanishing Half

The Vanishing Half began very slow for me. I was hoping it would get better as I continued to read, but it never did.

I had things in my mind of what I wanted to happen, exciting things, but I was always left hoping for more.

Much like Saint X, n the end, when all is revealed, it’s very anti-climactic.

This book may make a good movie, but again, nothing really big happens.

It’s more so about many people’s lives and in the book, the day to day isn’t super exciting. I like books that keep me turning pages because things are happening. That didn’t happen here.

Many people liked this book, so you may too. When I finished it, it had more than four stars on GoodReads.

For me, it was too slow and lacked any kind of excitement.

My The Vanishing Half Rating

I give The Vanishing Half 2 out of 5 stars. I just couldn’t get into it.
